Eleven arts writers and critics from six Southeast Asian countries are in Taiwan April 16-20 as part of the ArtsEquator Fellowship’s Critics Network program, supported in part by the Ministry of Culture and Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in Malaysia.
According to the MOC, the Singapore-based nonprofit was co-founded by Kathy Rowland and Jenny Daneels of Malaysia and plays an essential role in the region’s landscape. Rowland and the group’s executive director, Wahyuni Hadi, are also visiting Taiwan with the delegates.
The organization’s leaders expressed gratitude to the MOC for arranging the visit to introduce the region’s arts critics to Taiwan and said they expected the critics’ observations to foster global connection and create impactful cultural commentary.
During their stay, members of the group will attend performances at the Taiwan International Festival of Arts running through May 18 and share their observations of Taiwan’s art landscape. They will also take part in the Observers Forum set for April 19 in Taipei City.
Organized by Taipei-based Taiwan Contemporary Culture Lab, the Observers Forum brings arts critics with diverse national backgrounds to exchange perspectives and share experiences of the multifaceted nature of contemporary arts and culture.
During the forum’s first session, six of the visiting guests will shed light on the contemporary landscape of arts and cultural criticism in Southeast Asia, while in the second, critics and writers from Taiwan will focus closely on the ecosystem of art and cultural criticism at home. (SFC-E)
